Research Themes

Our research team are dedicated to applied research on all aspects of domestic energy performance. By collaborating with industry partners and policy makers, we aim to enhance energy efficiency in buildings. Our research encompasses every element of homes, from building fabric like insulation, doors, and windows, to future domestic energy systems and smart metering.

Our key research and commercial areas include:

  • Building Performance and Building Physics: We analyse the performance of building fabrics for both new constructions and retrofits, focusing on thermal conductivity (U Values), whole building performance (HTC), air permeability, and thermal bridging.
  • Systems Performance: Our team explores a wide range of heating systems (infrared, ASHP, gas boilers, resistive heating), emitters (radiators, underfloor heating), and controls.
  • Modelling: With access to extensive measured data, we develop highly calibrated models that accurately reflect actual buildings. These models are used to run simulations for future weather scenarios or specific use cases.
  • Consumer Advice: We regularly share our findings through the media, offering advice on simple energy efficiency interventions and new market products. Whenever possible, we make our findings publicly available.
