Professor Richard Fitton Speaks at UK Parliament on Net Zero

Posted by:

Professor Richard Fitton from our Energy House Labs was invited to speak at the House of Commons this week as part of a parliamentary session on the UK’s Net Zero strategy.

Speaking at the Energy Security and Net Zero Committee, he shared insights based on research from Energy House Labs, as well as perspectives from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Residential Property Group Panel. His contribution focused on the importance of a national retrofit strategy, the need to prioritise fabric-first approaches, the role of smart meter infrastructure, and ways to better measure the real-world performance of homes.

He also discussed how energy efficiency could be more closely linked to the house buying process, and reflected on how tools such as EPCs and SAP assessments could be improved to support the UK’s climate goals.

The session included two expert panels, with contributions from leading voices across the energy and housing sectors. Fellow speakers included Geraldine Bolton, Andrew Sissons, Professor Sara Walker, Maria Booker, Euan Sinclair, and Elliot Toomey.
