Research led by Professor Lubo Jankovic at Energy House Labs has been featured in The Guardian, highlighting how reversible heat pumps could help reduce overheating in modern homes.
The research, carried out in Energy House 2.0, tested a heat pump alongside fan coils in one of the houses. When the temperature inside the facility reached 32°C, the rooms remained between 19°C and 24.9°C.
With the heat pump running continuously, the cost was around £2.50–£3 per day.
The study found that using a heat pump for cooling can significantly reduce overheating in modern homes.
Professor Lubo Jankovic, who led the research, said the results “demonstrate that reversible heat pumps can play an important role in protecting future homes against overheating”.
He also highlighted the challenge of designing systems with both heating and cooling in mind, saying this “needs to be addressed before cooling this way becomes mainstream”.
