The discussion, part of the programme’s “Call You and Yours: Smart Meters” edition on BBC Radio 4, explored how smart meters are working for consumers, highlighting both the benefits they can bring and some of the challenges that still need to be addressed.

During the broadcast, Professor Fitton shared insights into how smart meters can help households better understand their energy use and engage with emerging energy technologies. These include flexible tariffs and low-carbon technologies such as electric vehicles, batteries and heat pumps.

The programme also featured contributions from Alex Belsham-Harris of Citizens Advice, alongside callers sharing their experiences of using smart meters.

While the discussion highlighted the positive role smart meters can play in helping people monitor and manage energy consumption, it also acknowledged that some issues remain to be solved as the technology continues to evolve.
