Energy House 1

Energy House 1 is a unique research and testing laboratory and comprises an early 20th century two-bedroom terraced house within an environmental chamber allowing an accurate and rapid assessment of energy efficient retro fit technologies.

It is a traditional construction; solid brick walls, suspended timber floors and single glazed windows with a conventional ‘wet’ heating system fired by a gas boiler. The environmental chamber can be used to simulate a wide variety of weather conditions with a temperature range from -12°C to +30°C. The chamber is also equipped with rigs to simulate wind, rain, snow and incident solar radiation.

Throughout the chamber and the house there are over 200 monitoring points with real time data collection of parameters such as temperature, humidity, heat flux, electricity and gas consumption.

The facility underpins a range of research topics including:

  • Building physics/performance
  • Sensors/data collection
  • Data analysis and visualisation
  • Human factors
  • Smart meters and connected homes

Energy House 1 Expertise

Energy House 1 explore issues of energy consumption in buildings. We use data from large scale field trials and building performance tests to construct accurate models and simulations of buildings and data analytics to look at large data sets of building and energy performance. Our Energy House 1 DEEP report 5.01 on fabric performance and DEEP report 5.02 on heating systems now available. Our team works with partners across a range of commercial and grant funded projects, providing a comprehensive offer of energy and buildings expertise.

Access Information

Location

Located on the Peel Park campus on the ground floor of the Cockcroft Building (Cockcroft Building is listed as building ‘K’ on the campus map; Energy House 1 is listed as a Specialist Facility).

Access

Cockcroft is accessible through a flat, paved area leading to automatic double doors. Access into the Energy House 1 chamber requires participants to step over a large door frame, and the walkway around the house inside the chamber is narrow so, unfortunately, we cannot accommodate wheelchair users into the chamber of this facility. The chamber can be viewed either through the glass entry door or viewing windows from the ground floor corridor or on the first floor (accessible via lift).

Rest Rooms

There are male, female, and gender-neutral accessible toilets on the ground floor of Cockcroft Building.

Accessible Parking

The closest car park is Newton car park, which has 13 disabled spaces for State-Registered Blue Badge holders. Alternatively, there are three disabled spaces outside Maxwell Building for State-Registered Blue Badge holders, whilst Irwell Place car park has five spaces for State-Registered Blue Badge holders (plus, 500 other spaces) and is an eight-minute walk away.
