Greater Manchester Retrofit Innovation Centre

We are currently working on the establishment of a Retrofit Innovation Centre. Centred around the facilities at Energy House Labs, the partnership will be considering questions around building and systems performance, air quality, acoustics, adaptation, energy flex, circularity and materials. We will be answering questions for the sector and with the sector.

We will be focusing on retrofit product and process innovation in domestic and non-domestic buildings in partnership with The University of Manchester, the Energy Innovation Agency and Sustainable Ventures. We will also be partnering directly with industry to help shape the question to deliver the following key objectives,

  • Improve quantity and quality of retrofit in the UK.
  • Convene the industry around the problem of and solutions to delivering retrofit
  • Support knowledge sharing within the sector to better support both the demand and supply side.
  • Drive innovation in the sector in terms of both product and process to improve performance and productivity
  • Put in place support for these businesses in scaling up delivering growth.

Over the next six months we will be working towards developing a centre to create national impact. We will be,

  • Delivering retrofit research infrastructure – we will be building a 1930s and 1980s house to provide research infrastructure to support our research.
  • Raising grant funding to help deliver a substantial four-year research programme.
  • Build an industry, policymaker, and third sector partnership that will help shape the questions.

Our ambition is to make the GM Retrofit Centre a place where we can have a national conversation about retrofit and address the issues that will help us deliver high quality homes for the UK.
